Welcome back to a new year of school Swallow Class!
It is always a really exciting time starting Year 6 and enjoying the challenges and excitement that comes with the final year of primary school. This first term sees our class returning to school as the oldest in school, and so, in every aspect of school life, we will be focusing on ensuring that we are excellent role models to the younger year groups. Â
We have started a whole class novel approach to reading lessons this year and are enjoying getting our teeth stuck into ‘Rooftoppers’ by Katherine Rundell. It’s a story with the core message of never ignoring a possible and chasing after your dreams. A message and drive that we hope to instil in all the children this year. It’s a beautifully written story that provides plenty of opportunity for deepening our reading and thinking skills. Our writing will continue to be inspired by the work of other authors and we will be focusing on the link between the reader and the writer when authoring our own written work. Please see the term planner for an overview of the texts we will delve into.Â
In maths we will continue to further our fluency and problem solving across a range of topics, beginning the year with place value and number. We will also be ensuring we are solid in our arithmetic basics.
Throughout the year in RE lessons, we will reflect on the significance of the Old Testament as part of Christian understanding of the revelation of Jesus. In the Autumn term, pupils will explore Moses and David. We will have plenty of opportunities to understand how to read the Bible, and everyone will be encouraged to recognise what stories meant to the people at the time of telling and what they mean to us now.
This half-term we will be attending swimming lessons on Wednesday afternoons so kit needs to be in school every week.
We look forward to sharing our work with the rest of the school and with our families and friends as we enjoy our year as Swallows.
Thank you in advance for working in partnership with the Year 6 team to ensure your child is secondary ready.
